Full range for Cardiff Central

A completely new set of digital information screens designed and manufactured by Infotec has been installed at Cardiff Central station for Transport for Wales, with replacement of all existing equipment and the addition of new displays to provide an outstanding level of passenger information.

The displays installed are providing information in both Welsh and English, helping to meet the Welsh Government’s commitment to dual language presentation throughout Wales.

The new and updated displays play an important role in enhancing facilities at the station, with the overall programme designed to increase capacity, reduce congestion, and transform the passenger environment.

Many of the new platform displays are white LED models. As a result of being brighter and higher in contrast white displays can be read very easily. In addition to clarity, the advantages of white LEDs include the fact that they have a 30% lower power requirement than yellow LEDs, adding environmental bonuses.

Several models from the TX Series of sunlight readable TFTs, designed for showing priority next train information, special notices, departure summaries and operational/disruption information in bright or outdoor locations, have been installed. The TX Series includes native HiTNi extended temperature and optically bonded TFT panels to ensure the best legibility in a variety of conditions as well as assisting with Infotec’s superior heat management.

A popular choice for the subway areas has been the TP Series of poster displays. The use of Infotec’s low profile TFT range (enclosures are less than 100mm in depth) ensures the displays can be mounted below the usual 2.5m height without the need for additional safety barriers making them ideal for this sub-surface environment where the space available is at a premium.

Cardiff Central is a Grade II listed building which meant there was a range of heritage considerations that needed to be considered when designing and installing the supports for the displays, which were also designed by Infotec. The subway area presented additional challenges, with innovative solutions and collaboration with partner organisations used to secure displays from the ceiling without disruption to the existing infrastructure.
